How can “家でした” also mean “ran away from home”?

家でした vs 家出した (ie deshita vs iede shita)
Japanese homophone pun
“[he] was home” and “[he] ran away from home” are pronounced exactly the same: いえでした.

This whole sketch runs on one accidental homophone. The wife keeps reporting たかしが家でした (“Takashi was home”) — but every time, her husband hears たかしが家出した (“Takashi ran away from home”), because both phrases are pronounced identically: いえでした. Without visible word breaks or kanji in spoken Japanese, listeners parse meaning from context alone, and this sketch deliberately keeps everyone parsing it wrong.

The pun works because 家出 (iede, “running away from home”) plus the past-tense verb した (shita, “did”) produces いえでした — the exact same string of sounds as 家 (ie, “house”) plus the copula でした (deshita, “was”). This kind of parsing collision is a real, well-known feature of spoken Japanese (the classic textbook example is ここではきものをぬいでください, which can split two different ways). The sketch milks it for over a minute of repeated confusion — the wife oblivious, the husband increasingly panicked — before either of them catches the misunderstanding.
